Caring for your Tropical Freshwater Aquarium

Introduction
Many tropical fish will live happy healthy lives in a fresh water aquarium if you follow a few simple steps.
Remember that fish can't tell you if they are not happy, or not so you need to take the lead.
Gathering the right information on maintenance of your fishes can easily help your tropical fish live longer in that fresh water aquarium.
Here are seven simple things for you to remember - the 7 keys:

1 - Water Quality
Poor water quality will not only distress your fish, it can also cause considerably or even death.
Ensure you have an appropriate filtration system installed, and that you replace 10% of the water in your aquarium every couple of weeks with clean de-chlorinated water

2 - Test your water
Water testing kits are available at all good pet stores. Test your water and in the case of any issues, take the appropriate corrective action.
The kit will usually tell you what action you need to take.

3 - Oxygen
Your fish breath oxygen. Lack of oxygen is, therefore a major concern. Ensure your water is aerated, and use oxygenating plants.
Most importantly, do not overstock!

4- Algae
Large amounts of algae can cause major damage to your tropical fish. Clean your tank regularly. If possible, keep it out of direct sunlight.
Consider investing in algae eating fish (such as plecostomus)

5 - Which food
There is a large variety of fish food available in the market.
Some fish (including most cichlids) require specialist foods, so always check.
Also check the feeding habits of your fish.
Bottom feeders (including most catfish) require food that will sink to the bottom of your tank. They will not thrive if you only feed floating pellets or flakes.

6 - Balanced diet
While choosing the right fish food for your pets, make sure to read the contents and ingredients. The fish food should provide a balanced diet for good health and colour (after all you are keeping fish to look at them).
Many fish will benefit from an occasional live feed of bloodworm or daphnia. These are often available at your local pet store.
Tropical fish will not prosper if given too much or too little food. Additionally, too much food will decompose in the tank and reduce your water quality.

7 - Read the instructions
Make sure to read through the instructions when you add anything new to your aquarium.
This includes chemicals to adjust water quality, and food - absolutely everything in fact!
